【Concept】
The installation is a contemporary interpretation of the roji (traditional Japanese alleyway), a symbolic feature of the aesthetic of the shichu no sankyo (urban retreat). The three concentric circles—representing the outer roji, inner roji and hideaway—are enclosed by split bamboo pieces, characterized by their beautiful slits. Viewers are invited to proceed toward the inner circle, appreciating the atmospheric landscaping, sound of water, and smell of earth along the way, to discover a space removed from everyday life and worldly concerns, where they can be in dialog with nature, represented by a planting of touch-me-nots.
