The Kobe Biennale 2007 is the first art festival of significant scale to take place in Kobe. Various competitions have been held as part of the festival, with “Art in a Container” competition being the main one. Through these competitions we wish to discover and foster new talent.
 

Art in a Container
The main competition and exhibit of the Kobe Biennale 2007. Freight containers that are familiar to the port Kobe are used as an exhibit space. The size is 12m × 2.4m × 2.5m, and one end of the 2.4m x 2.5m sides opens.

・ October 3, 2007: Grand Prix and Special Prizes awarded. Click here for detail

・ March 23, 2007: 45 selected out of 356 entries. These works are exhibited during the Kobe Biennale 2007. Click here to see the works.

・ February 1 - 28, 2007: Application period. Entrants are to send in documents, 1/20 scale model, DVD etc to describe the plan.


Universal Design Posters
Universal design is becoming more and more popular and is used in various fields. We invite designers to create a poster design for the Kobe Biennale 2007 with universal design; easy for everyone to understand, and appropriate for the international city, Kobe.

Street Performance
Street performance can be seen as an art form with body expression; we invite street performers to present their skill such as juggling and pantomime that are enjoyable for the general public. Selected artists will show their performance to visitors at the Kobe Biennale 2007, and the audience on site will vote for the best performer.

• October 11, 2007: Awards announced
• October 6 - 8, 2007: Performance
• May 15, 2007: Prelim selection. 17 groups to perform at the main venue
• March 12 - April 20, 2007: Application



Children’s Painting
We invite the elementary school and kindergarten children to express their emotions – surprise, wonder, fun, sadness, beauty, etc – through painting.

Modern Ceramic Art
Whether traditional or avant-garde, new creation is welcome. The work is to be no larger than 90 cubic cm, and less than 60kg.

・Mid-September 2007: 100 entries selected. These are to be exhibited at the main venue

Robot Media Art
An object is called a “robot” as long as it involves technology of sensing, information processing and machine control. For robots, communicating with human being is yet to be developed. How are we going to live with the ever-evolving technologies – movement, sound and images? We invite artists/engineers to use the robot technology as an art medium to present a new type of art.
・November 3, 2007: Final selection for prizes

Artistic Photograph
Applications are invited for artistic photographs with unique idea and technique.

Floating Objects
Applications are invited for “floating” art objects, to decorate the major shopping arcades of Kobe City.

Able Art: Friends – Art on a Postcard
Disabled persons are invited to send in their drawing/painting to the theme “My wonderful face” on postcard sized paper. Their works will be exhibited at the main venue during the Kobe Biennale 2007. (Please note: Able Art is not a competition.)
